Energy bills reach �1,250 a year on average

Energy bills are set to cost households £1,250 a year on average after five of the 'Big Six' utility firms have announced price hikes to their tariffs.According to figures from uSwitch.com, as many as 24.6 million customers will be affected by pre and post-Christmas price increases, with E.ON becoming the latest firm to announce rises of three per cent for gas and nine per cent for electricity from February 4th.Just EDF Energy has announced a price freeze until at least March.In total, the comparison site said that tariff increases have added £560 million onto household bills."I would urge anyone who hasn't yet ditched their old fashioned and expensive standard tariff to do so and move to a competitive online plan instead," advised Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com"It's the equivalent of saving almost a third off your bill and this substantial saving can be further boosted by adopting sensible energy efficiency measures."Consumers can also see what energy grants they are eligible for to help pay off bills.Posted by Emily Thomas Sign up for regular email updates to help you save money and energy
