Could the price of fuel urge fleets to go electric?

The increasing cost of petrol could be placing a strain on fleet consultants eager to keep their budgets low in the tight economic climate. This week saw VAT increase from 17.5 per cent to 20 per cent, while fuel duty rates were also increased 0.76p a litre.Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, commented on the rise: "It is a bleak midwinter for motorists with already record petrol prices set to rise significantly with the fuel Duty and VAT increases. And that won't be the end of it with more increases in fuel duty already scheduled for April."For some drivers looking to reduce their fuel costs, purchasing an alternative fuel car could be the answer, especially now that the government is offering £5,000 towards the cost of a new electric vehicle.Other options for motorists to reduce fuel costs include ways to reduce transport mileage or reduce fuel consumption. Using smarter driving techniques, drivers can lower fuel consumption by around 15 per cent, according to the Energy Saving Trust.Posted by Mark Stephens Find out more about travel planning
